I just got back to Cairo earlier this week after several days in the port city of Alexandria, named after its founder Alexander the Great. It was my second time traveling to Iskandariyah, both times for an ultimate frisbee tournament called The Egyptian Open. I played this time with a somewhat newly established team from Lebanon called Ultimate Hyenas, the mostly Lebanese roster augmented by some of my old friends from the Amman, Jordan ultimate community.

We finished at the bottom of the standings but won the Spirit Award for having the best sportsmanship of all 17 teams. I think the young, inexperienced university students who comprise the heart of the Hyenas’ roster learned a lot, improved a lot, and came away with a much better understanding of the levels of compe…
